Easton coming out of his cramped van after the long trip from Tennessee. |
If you follow me on Instagram (and if you don't, what are you waiting for?), you know that...we got a dog! This is actually most surprising to me considering I have always been firmly Team Cat. I grew up with dogs, and loved my dogs, but have never really liked a dog since. Until I met this guy.
And, in a nod to the times, I first fell in love with him after spotting his photo via a tweet. (We actually first spotted his brother Egan, but he was already claimed.) The rescue then suggested we check out this little guy and we were pretty darn smitten.
His name is Easton. (That's the name he came with--we planned to change it, but it stuck. He just is Easton.) He's a beagle/collie mix and he actually hails from Tennessee! We got him from Waggytail Rescue in NYC--they rescued him from a "high kill" shelter (eek) down there. Easton traveled all night with his brother and sister in a crowded van crammed full of rescued pets. We woke our daughter up at 5:30am, told her we had a surprise, drove groggily into the city, and picked him up.
And now he's ours! He's a total sweetie, but man is he a lot of trouble! If someone had told me a month ago that having a puppy is like having a kid, I would have laughed in their face. But, now having one, I can definitely see the comparison. (For the record though, kid/baby is way harder--but puppy is still hard!) He chews on the coffee table, he hates being left alone, he wakes me up at 5:00 a.m. every day without fail. But all is forgiven when he snuggles up on your lap and falls asleep.
And how cute is this? Thanks once again to social media, I have connected with the new "parents" of both his brother Egan and his sister Roxy. And get this: Egan lives in Hoboken, too! These brothers were born in Tennessee, traveled to New York City, were adopted separately, and now live just a few blocks away from each other in New Jersey. I find that pretty awesome. We are having a puppy playdate/brother reunion this Sunday and we cannot wait.
If you have a dog and have any tips on good toys, yummy treats, training secrets, or anything else, please tell me below! I need all the help I can get! :)

Oh man, are you going to regret that I read this...
I'm obsessed with my dog. Which means I've done a lot of research on food, toys, products to use, products to not use, training suggestions etc. etc. etc. You should probably email me if you have any specific questions before I go on a huge "how to care for your dog: an opinionated essay" tangent.
He is SO cute! Love this story. With my rescue pup, I loved the Monks of New Skete book "The Art of Raising a Puppy." It was more helpful than any other training book a read and I still turn to it now when my lab has some training setbacks. Good luck!
Yeah it's so cute, check this out best female dog names to choose from for your little puppy
