How to Get The Most Gorgeous Red Lips (Plus a Version If You're Not a "Red Lips Person")

From top, images c/o: Dolce & Gabbana, @theLoveMagazine@patmcgrathreal (and yep, that's Kendall Jenner)

Season after season, Dolce & Gabbana never fails to have one of the most gorgeous looks of Milan Fashion Week. And the most recent show was no different. I think I audibly gasped when I saw these images of the stunning crimson lips; flawless, doll-like skin; and glossy buns with red roses and carnations tucked inside.

If you want to recreate the red lips seen at the show, the three colors that makeup artist/makeup god Pat McGrath used were the new Dolce & Gabbana Dolce Matte Lipstick in Dolce Desire (on the cupid's bow and center of the lips), and Classic Cream Lipstick in Ultra and Classic Cream Lipstick in Amethyst (on the outer edges).

For me, personally, I love red lips on other people or in photos (I mean, these are just dreamy, no?), but I always find them a bit tough to wear in my real life. If that's you, too, or if you just want something a bit less dramatic (you know, for those days when the schedule is more playdates/Starbucks runs and less Oscars/Kimye wedding), try patting on red lipstick with your fingers instead of applying it straight from the tube.

This isn't necessarily earth-shattering news, I know, but it sort of changed my life when I first tried it. It really works: You'll still get a punch of color and that "red lips" feeling, but the effect will be much more muted and laid-back. Basically, you'll get the prettiness of red lipstick without feeling like you're walking around with a blaring traffic light on your face.

Another way to get a similar low-key look: Use a sheer red lip crayon. I do that a lot and I am obsessed with this shade. It lets you get red lips without even using a mirror. How often does that happen?

Below are a few of my favorite red lipsticks, whether you're going for the Dolce-perfect look or the slapdash/cool-girl vibe.

  1. Like you, I love red lips but in photos or on other women. I don't feel particularly comfortable with red lips, because they're really showy. Also, I noticed that some people (women most of all) look at you in a different way, as they were thinking "Red lips, really? Who do you think you are, a diva?". Said that, when I want to wear red lipstick I do the same as you, or I put lots of lipstick on and they take it off. I once bought a Sephora liquid lipstick which is probably the best ever.
